A blog makeover story

For awhile now, I've been meaning to clean up and redesign the blog but haven't had the time or proper knowledge of coding to do so. A bout of the sniffles yesterday resulted in a sick day and ample time to clean things up a bit. I think everything is much more streamlined and easy to find and the new logo header is much more fitting to my brand. Hope you like it as much as I do! :)

Holiday terrariums!

I love the look of these compartmentalized holiday decorations from Terrain. They have a whole line of goodies so that you can make your own holiday terrarium to add a little cheer to a wintry window sill. This is lovely for someone like me who barely has enough room in their tiny apartment for an office, let alone a Christmas tree! Make yours here!

Baby it's Cold Outside

Yesterday, a fog advisory was issued for the Bay Area and temperatures were downright chilly. I'm not a fan of the cold weather and the sniffling and shivering that comes with it, but I do love the cold weather attire that comes out of it. A knit cap with a furry pompom on top just screams Winter, wouldn't you agree?

From ZineFest

Hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving weekend! For me, it's been non-stop visiting {and eating} with family and preparing for and participating in ZineFest yesterday! It almost feels like a welcome change to the busy weekend to get back into the swing of my regular routine at work {almost...}.

ZineFest was fun, it was held at Gilman's, a historic punk rock venue and Green Day's old stomping grounds! It was great to meet many great local artists and crafters and to just hang out and people-watch. Here's a few shots of my booth set-up!

Thanks again to all who came out to show their support and a special thanks to Rock Paper Scissors Collective for hosting us! We hope to be back again real soon!!

2011 Holiday Gift Guide: Hostess

1. Jam Gift Package by Martha Stewart // 2. Brooklyn Slate Cheeseboard via Gilt Taste // 3. Maple Candy Dish from Herriot Grace // 4. Fabric-wrapped soap from Anthropologie // 5. Linen tea towels in "Retro Trees" by Red Wren Designs // 6. Linnea's Lights Fir Candle from Terrain

Before we all go off to our Thanksgiving parties tomorrow {and start the holiday party season!} I thought it would be only fitting to include The Hostess into my Holiday Gift Guide! {in case you missed it, check out part 1 of my Holiday Gift Guide here!}

It's always a nice gesture to show up to a party with a gift for your hostess. I'll usually bring a bottle of wine or call ahead to ask if anything is needed from the grocery store, but I love the idea of these little tokens of appreciation to say Thank You to your hostess. These black slate cheese boards are not only handsome, but are also useful for your hostess' next party! The maple candy dish is also useful for this purpose and can also be used to display pretty little cakes! Martha Stewart has a DIY jam gift package which is as easy as tying your favorite jam and a baguette together with a pretty ribbon. Scents of rose petals mingled together with white musk and sandalwood complete this lovely fabric-wrapped soap, and continue to tingle the senses with fir tree-scented soy candles. And finally, no kitchen is complete without dish towels, so give your hostess these graphic tea towels to add a colorful pop to the kitchen!

That's it for me! Stay tuned for more holiday gift ideas throughout the holiday season! Happy Shopping and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones! xoxo

It's bedtime

Virginia Johnson

It's been awfully cold lately {by California standards} and I can't help but just want to be in bed under the blankets with the heater turned up and of course have my bed mates {boy and pup} snuggled up close. Any of these bedding sets from textile designer {and Kate Spade illustrator!} Virginia Johnson are sure to do the trick in the warming factor all while being super cute and stylish.

ZineFest 2011

Rock Paper Scissors Collective
Just wanted to pop over real quick to share that I'll be a vendor at East Bay ZineFest 2011 hosted by Rock Paper Scissors Collective on Sunday, November 27th from 12pm to 6pm. It'll be an afternoon of art, crafts, food and rockin' bands. The event will be at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley so if you live in the Bay Area {and are able to get up from your turkey coma!} you should stop by and say hi! {big thanks to my virtual pal Marian from Urban Petite Designs for keeping me in the know on this event!} Hope to see you there! xoxo

Wouldn't these handpainted dishes by Rebecca Rebouche be a lovely addition to a Thanksgiving table? Available at Anthropologie.

Friday Roundup: Sketchy

When I was a student I would pass time in lecture halls by doodling in my notebook while drifting in and out of some discussion on the theory of art. This was of course in a time before iPhones whereas now students are probably more likely to be sneaking in a game of Angry Birds hidden in their laps. {I still refuse to download that game!} There's a free-spirited quality to the sketchy doodle, as though artists are sharing a piece of their notebook or journal with the world. The results are raw and beautifully imperfect.

First up are some lovely gifts for the gal pals! Sparkly sequin details, patterned notebooks, and bubble bath disguised as a bottle of vino are just some of the pretty gifts that you can get for your BFFs. Give her the book of Vintage Cocktails and you can have a girl's night in experimenting with different recipes! And what gal wouldn't like a gorgeous clutch with a fabulous fold-over detail? And of course a scarf is a necessity in the coming months, and this one from Bajra in ombre shades is sure to keep her warm and fashionable. Happy shopping! xoxo

Boho jewels

I'm crazy about this collection of jewelry from Iosselliani with its rad details of fringe and feathery goodness. Such statement pieces would be best served with the basics...can you just imagine that fluttery necklace with a long-sleeved white dress, chunky ankle boots and messy beach hair?? Perfection.

I was honored to be interviewed for Freutcake, one of my favorite daily reads! You may remember I interviewed the lovely Ms. Leah last month for my In the Creative Suite column, and now the tables have turned as she interviews me in her 5 Questions feature! Pop on over and give it a read! (cameo made by my sister's freakishly tan shoulder)

A Holiday Roadtrip

It's hard to believe that next week is already Thanksgiving! Every year we have dinner at my parents' house but this year will be more special because my sister will be driving up to spend it with us! It's been years since she's been able to make it home for Thanksgiving because as a US Marine she was always stationed too far away to make it home easily for the holidays, but this year she's been stationed down in San Diego which is about an 8 hour drive away from the Bay Area! She'll be driving up next week with her pal Brittany and her new puppy Zooey! In honor of this momentous occasion, I've compiled some goodies that are necessary for any holiday roadtrip!

Grilled cheese @ The Melt

Lately I've been reimagining the grilled cheese sandwich. I used to love the simple American cheese slice between two slices of bread as a kid, but as an adult I've been feeling inspired to find ways to update the classic cheesy sandwich. A couple months ago, I played around with throwing together a blend of cheddar and provolone with slices of ham and pear, and drenched it in butter and garlic. I must admit, it was surprisingly tasty, especially with the pear softening up over the stove and being covered in melty cheese.

So you can imagine my delight when last week on my lunch break I strolled around the corner from my office to discover a new restaurant called The Melt, whose menu consists primarily of gourmet grilled cheese and soups. I got the Parisian combo which consists of brie with apple butter grilled on white wheat bread with tomato and bacon added and a side of wild mushroom soup. It's a heavenly little combo made all the more desireable by their cute decor of white subway tiles with industrial metal stools and pops of orange and Rockwell font used throughout.

It's pretty much my new favorite place which I've already visited twice since Thursday; and now my lunch breaks are about to become a little more tempting.

Friday Roundup: Colorblocking

There's a retro feel to colorblocking that reminds me of Neoplasticism paintings of the past, but with updated color palettes in pops of fuschias and greens. These looks are best paired in clashing colors to create a style that is both dynamic and bold.

Under the big top

Do you have any big plans this weekend? Matt and I going to Cirque du Soleil on Saturday, and we're pretty stoked! I've been to one of their shows before but this will be Matt's first time going. For those who aren't familiar, Cirque du Soleil is a circus styled show that features a mix of acrobats and dance from around the world with each show having a different central theme. It's kind of like a modern day circus, but there's still hints of that vintage circus feel which I love and can't get enough of. From magical doves to a 1920's styled tweed and fur coat, these styles hearken back to the theatrical circus of yesteryear.

Out of the Woodwork

It's fair to say that I am both parts tomboy and a lady. I like playing around with different looks whether it be a sweet flouncy dress to faux motorcycle jackets. I'm a gal who's a little rough around the edges, and this gal takes notice to masculine elements played up into girlish designs such as these assortment of wooden clutches. They're bold in their simplicity and would be beautiful to tote around with a warm furry coat this winter.

Welcome home my love

I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a romantic. Okay, I'm a big romantic and The Notebook makes me weep. I love my hubby with every inch of my heart and everyday I feel so lucky to have found my best friend and love all rolled into one beautiful package. I'm always leaving little notes of sweet nothings around the house for Matt to find on any given day to remind him how special he is to me. These decals by Shanna Murray feature lovely sentiments nestled in pretty hand-drawn florals that are sure to brighten anyone's day too. The Welcome Home my Love decal would be such a warm welcome to an entryway, don't you think?

Mish-mashed SF

These spaces designed by Tyler Dawson are a perfectly chic mixture of old and new. Vintage items are carefully curated together with a modern mish-mash of patterns and accented with gilden pieces throughout. I could very easily move in right away {especially since these homes are just one neighborhood over from my office in SF! Now if only my office would pay me enough to live in that neighborhood...}
